August 2018 Morning Basket

Faith Studies:

Our hymn selection this month is, "Baptized Into Your Name Most Holy," from the beautiful My First Hymnal from CPH press. We're still chugging through the Gospel of Luke at dinner, and we're reading through Louis Giglio's  Indescribable: 100 Devotions for Kids about God and Science.

We're also continuing with Mindful Kids: 50 Activities for Calm, Focus, and Peace. We LOVE these cards! My husband and I enjoy them as much as the kids.

Memory Work:

We're still working through Cycle 1 from Classical Conversations Foundation Guide , which focuses on the Ancients. We're memorizing Psalm 1, and for the first time ever, we're adding poetry memorization. My six year-old will begin with "And Now We are Six" from Now We are Six by A.A. Milne, of course.

I'm still loving First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind  The short, oral lessons cover basic grammar rules, poetry memorization, and picture study. Students are also asked to memorize their address, phone number, etc.

Fine Arts:

Would you rather listen to Elvis than T.S. Eliot? That's Alright, Mama. There's a place for pop culture in your Morning Basket. In preparation for a trip to Memphis, we'll be reading:

Boys Who Rocked the World

Elvis: A Graphic Novel

Elvis: The Story of the Rock and Roll King

And we might have several dance parties, too! This is a part of our children's cultural heritage. Then, he'll get to hear from his grandparents who saw Elvis in concert (and sometimes just about town). This is a part of his family heritage, too.

Some of these selections were carried over from last month's Morning Basket. I actually had time to film a closer look that you can watch here. Hopefully, I'll be able to give you another video next month, too!
